FAQ's
I have old paint can I bring it to this event?
Yes, BUT ONLY if it is an OIL based, LEAD based, or SPRAY paint.
Latex paint (most interior paint) is not accepted.
What do I do with my latex paint or empty paint cans?
Take the lids off of your latex paint cans and let the paint dry out. You may also put kitty litter or sand into the paint cans to absorb any wet paint. When dry, throw the lid and paint can into your trash.
I can't make the event in my County. What do I do?
Northwest Cleansweep is a cooperative venture supported by: Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, Taylor and Washburn Counties; WIDATCP, and Northwest Regional Planning Commission.
If you are a resident of any of these counties, you may attend ANY of the collection events. You may be asked to show proof of residence at any event.

What is considered Household Hazardous Waste?
This publication (PDF, 1 pg) lists whether some household waste is considered hazardous or not.
Remember, LATEX PAINT is NOT considered Household Hazardous Waste.
Which batteries can be recycled?
Recycling of lead acid vehicle batteries, lithium ion batteries when contained in landfill-bill electronics is required.
Here is a flyer from the WI DNR that that explains Household Battery Disposal Options (PDF, 2 pgs, 64MB).
I'm confused, one list says my item is not accepted, but another list says it is accepted. What is going on?
Yes, it can be a bit confusing. If our county is JUST holding the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection during its Clean Sweep Event, then some items are not allowed.
However, if our county has added in an Electronics Collection and/or a Medications/Sharps collection during the Clean Sweep Event; then some items that cannot be collected by the HHW collection business, may be collected by other entities a the same event.
Please check the flyers for clarifications. If you still have questions, contact Theresa at 715-373-3285 or theresa.lachappelle@bayfieldcounty.wi.gov or further information.
